Compass Deluxe brings navigation on aerial imagery and friend tracking

Published by at

With Nokia's HERE Maps and HERE Drive applications ensconced on 90% of the Windows Phones in existence, another navigation aid seems somewhat redundant, but there are some neat tweaks worth highlighting in Compass Deluxe, not least the use of aerial photography as standard and the ability to track a friend's location.

Somewhat ridiculously, the Windows Phone description just says "Look up a place and find it with 3D map navigation." But hopefully a walkthrough will help explain Compass Deluxe's raison d'etre a little better....

The opening (Mercator) aerial image sets the tone for Compass Deluxe - although plain vector maps (from Bing and others) are also available, there's a definite wow factor to the use of '3D' aerial imagery, though there's an obvious bandwidth hit to download the graphical tiles as you go. Note the location of my house(!), plus the correct orientation of the compass rose, bottom-right.

With bandwidth being an issue at times, you'll often end up with screens like this, with part in high resolution and part still in low resolution preview. Still, when it's working you can look for a place and get walking or driving guidance on-screen, rotated to match travel direction and all overlaid on the imagery. Cool.

Bringing up the toolbar and main menu - of note in Settings is the ability to download maps for offline use (a la HERE Maps), but even after rebooting my phone several times I couldn't get this to work, with Compass Deluxe complaining about me having another 'mapping app in use'. (Right) Setting up an account, you can then start inviting friends... in order to track them(!) And them, you, of course...

Accepting a friend invitation and tracking them on one of the many map views....

The settings and legends are beautifully explained. Well done to the developer, in this regard.

Compass Deluxe sits in something of a middle ground between Nokia's slick first person offerings and social tracking utilities - it can be used to navigate, or to track, or to explore.... or just to find out which way 'North' is!

You can download Compass Deluxe for free here in the Store - given the price, it's well worth a download to try out for yourself.
