Cityglance: 'Travel, Meet & Share'. Well, maybe

Published by at

Aargh! Not another social network! Oh yes. In this case one based around geographical presence on public transport routes in a number of cities across the world. I know it sounds unlikely, and something you'd see pitched in the 'Dragons Den', but apparently Cityglance has taken off in some cities in Europe, thanks mainly to its cross-platform nature.

From the Store description:

Cityglance is the first social app connecting people on public transportation all over the world. Social meetings and sharing information about your daily routes will become reality thanks to Cityglance. Cityglance allows you to find out who is travelling with you on public transport.

Have you ever seen someone interesting among subway commuters but never spoke up? How many times did you fall in love at first sight on public transport but never made the first move? Thanks to Cityglance you can enter the “Glancers” community, searching and finding people that caught your eye. Moreover, you can share your trip, your emotions and what you’re thinking with your friends travelling on the same route.

  • Check-in on your route and share thoughts, photos and transport notifications in real time. You can also report malfunctions and delays on your route to assist the travelling community.
  • Send your Glance to people around you and make new friends.
  • Find lost glances with the somatic search function: indicate the day, the route and some physical features of the person you saw.

Also featuring:

  • Automatic Geo-localization
  • Check in (public or private) on the route and Facebook sharing
  • Private Messaging – Offline Search
  • Profile and Friend Requests Manage
  • Facebook Friends Invitation Get on board and start to use Cityglance to connect and improve your trip experience!

Cityglance is now available in more than 400 cities in Europe and United States!

A brief attempt at using this in London was met with a single, solitary person on the same route. So it's clearly very early days for the concept. Here are a few promo and actual screenshots of Cityglance in action:

I'm not sure if this is brilliant or intensely creepy. Your comments welcome!

Everything's dependent on where you live - strange that London's Paddington wasn't on this list for example - and yes, I know it's more a station than a place. But still... (right) Perhaps tellingly, the Glance Search reveals what Cityglance is really for - picking up partners 'at first glance' while meeting on public transport.

Perhaps the ultimate sin though(!) - using the slogan that implies that there exists any human in the world who 'loves' commuting!

I raise this application purely for interest. By all means give it a try where you are. You can grab Cityglance in the Store here. I'm sure you can give it a far better work out than me!
