Of Insider rollout errors and Windows Device Recovery Tools

Published by at

By all means file this under 'things you didn't really need to know', but it's worth noting that the previous Windows 10 Mobile Insiders Preview build rollout included a provisioning error that showed the build to handsets which really shouldn't have seen it, notably the HTC 8X - which then ended up being totally bricked. Microsoft, at the time, promised a fix for this mess and according to WindowsBlogItalia, this has arrived in the shape of the newly tweaked (and renamed) Windows Device Recovery Tool.

The Windows-only tool was, in previous incarnations:

  1. Nokia Software Update
  2. Lumia Software Recovery Tool
  3. Windows Phone Recovery Tool
  4. (and now) Windows Device Recovery Tool

Wow. I sure hope there are no headed notepaper or business cards associated with the team behind this!

From the WindowsBlogItalia post:

As promised, Microsoft has worked to remedy the malfunction occurred as a result of  the error of the release of several of unsupported phone builds including for the HTC 8XFor the latter a fix it is already readily available, released through the Windows Device Recovery Tool, updated a few hours ago.

As you can see now HTC 8X is supported by the Microsoft tool that allows the recovery of the device through reinstalling the firmware to restore Windows Phone 8.1 .

The tool is a vital resource, of course, to any Windows Phone owner, I've used it numerous times to rescue bricked devices or to go 'back' a step to an official release after trying a developers preview or Insiders Build. You can download the latest Windows Device Recovery Tool here.

Plus if any HTC 8X owners reading this did get caught out by Microsoft's error then you know what to download and what to do.
