Enter almost the perfect Android smartphone for a Lumia fan?

Published by at

I've done various rundowns in the past as to which current smartphones would be a good fit for (say) an ex-Lumia 950 fan. And I guess I'll have to return to these because Sony just launched what I consider to be a 'Goldilocks' smartphone. Neither too big nor too small, with all the gadgets and bells and whistles (bar one) that you might need.

The 'Xperia 5 ii' is unashamedly aimed at music, media and imaging enthusiasts. Which sounds pretty much like most people reading AAWP, I reckon. See what you think of the promo video - I'd highlight the top end triple camera, the 3.5mm audio output with power amp, and the front facing stereo speakers, in particular:

The general specs of the Xperia 5 ii, running fairly stock Android 10, include:

  • 5G data/comms
  • 158 x 68 x 8 mm, 163g
  • Gorilla Glass 6 front and back, metal frame
  • Single SIM (Nano-SIM) or Hybrid Dual SIM (Nano-SIM, dual stand-by)
  • IP65/IP68 dust/water resistant
  • 6.1" 1080p, 21:9 aspect ratio OLED capacitive touchscreen, HDR10-rated, 120Hz refresh rate
  • Qualcomm SM8250 Snapdragon 865
  • microSDXC expansion (uses shared SIM slot)
  • 128GB storage, 8GB RAM or 256GB storage 8GB RAM
  • main camera: 12 MP, f/1.7, 1/1.7", Dual Pixel PDAF, OIS, ZEISS optics
  • telephoto camera: 12 MP, f/2.4, 1/3.4", PDAF, 3x optical zoom, OIS
  • ultra-wide camera: 12 MP, f/2.2, 1/2.55", Dual Pixel PDAF
  • Stereo speakers
  • 3.5mm jack, 24-bit/192kHz audio
  • Wi-Fi 802.11 a/b/g/n/ac/6, dual-band, Wi-Fi Direct, DLNA, hotspot
  • Bluetooth 5.0, A2DP, aptX HD, LE
  • NFC
  • USB 3.1, Type-C 1.0 reversible connector; USB On-The-Go
  • Fingerprint sensor (side-mounted), accelerometer, gyro, proximity, barometer, compass, color spectrum sensor
  • 4000 mAh battery
  • 21W fast charging
  • USB Power Delivery 3.0

Comments welcome. There's a lot here to like. Though there's no Qi charging and Sony made a bit of a mess of the camera combination on the larger sister device, the Xperia 1 ii, so let's hope they've fixed the software up for the Xperia 5 ii... The Xperia 5 ii is also a little expensive, £800 is being quoted.
