Live Tile News offers visual view of BBC News feeds

Published by at

Live Tile News, developed by Web Services UK, offers a new visual way to look at the BBC News feeds. It uses columns of thumbnail images to show a visual representation of a large number of news headlines in a relatively small space. Tapping one of the images takes you to a summary of the news story, from where you can follow a link to the BBC News site to read the full story.

Each of the standard categories from the BBC site are given their own column (World, Local, Business, Politics, Health, Education, Science, and Technology). The local category is automatically set (UK, USA, Australia) based on your phone's locale setting. As you might expect, given the app's name, any of the categories can also be added as a Live Tile to the start screen. This allows you to see the latest news, for the specified category, directly on your start screen.

There are a number of apps that use the BBC feeds already available for Windows Phone (e.g. BBC News Mobile), but Live Tile News manages to differentiate itself by taking a a visual approach that lends itself to rapidly scanning large numbers of news stories.

Live Tile News also caught our eye because it is what the developer describes as a "ChApp" - a portmanteau of charity app - where all the proceeds from the app are donated to charity. In this case the beneficiaries are the Alzheimer's Society, Parkinsons UK and the Multiple Sclerosis Trust.

Live Tile News can be downloaded, for free (ad supported), from the Windows Phone Marketplace.

More information is available on the developer's blog.
