Lifelens uses Windows Phone software to detect malaria

Published by at

Now this is very impressive. As part of the 2011 Imagine Cup coding competition, the team from Lifelens have demoed software that will let a Windows Phone detect malaria. Using a combination of imaging software and macro lenses, a Windows Phone handset can be turned into a clinical microscope that can analysis a droplet of blood. Adding in a special dye that highlights the malaria virus, the high resolution achievable allows for a very fast diagnosis, which Lifelens states has 94% accuracy in detecting malaria.

It's very early days, and the team need a lot of investment to keep up their work, but they believe they are now ready for market. You can read more on the project at the Lifelens blog, while Jennifer Hicks has went into more detail on Forbes.
