Second Generation WP handsets reach Australia

The team at WP Down Under have a smile on their face today, as one of the Australian mobile networks finally pick up a second generation Windows Phone device. The Samsung Omnia W (renamed from the Focus Flash in US markets) is available on Telstra as a free handset (after mail in rebate) on the $59 Freedom Connect plan.

They've also take the time to do a full review on the Omnia W as it reaches the stores, and they love the handset, calling it "the affordable pocket rocket WP7":

The more I used this handset over my week of testing, the more I came to like it! From initially feeling too small and light in my hands - by the time of writing this review the Omnia W actually managed to make my Focus feel a little “awkward” in the hand! Whilst sitting firmly in the mid-range of feature sets (screen size, storage, premium design elements, LTE etc.) – this handset excels at nearly every task thrown at it.

One of the features that they are enjoying is the tethering ability of the handset, running their Acer tablet over a wi-fi connection to the Omnia W, and then on to Telstra.

It's the first handset in Australia, and with more second generation handsets due to arrive (both on Telstra and the other competing networks), the Windows Phone family is hotting up in the southern hemisphere!
