On opening the ESPNcricinfo app you are presented with a list of ongoing live matches, current fixtures and recent results. Tapping on one of the live games or results take you into a pivot for that game. The live/score page shows the scorecard for the match; commentary (where available) offers ball-by-ball updates, with an option to filter to only see major items (wickets, 4s, 6s); graphs (e.g. partnership / stands); report (text story) and photos.
Other clever touches include support for expanded score sheets when rotating the phone into a landscape orientation and a 'lean back' mode that shows a live score in a full screen mode and is designed to left on your desk, so you can easily follow a game throughout the day (though it is missing an option to disable screen timeout).
The app also gives access to much of cricinfo's other content including video and audio highlights, and articles from the site's news and magazine service. As you would expect the usual related articles and sharing features are readily available.
Other content, accessible though the menu page of the main panorama, includes fixtures (international and domestic), records (e.g. top run scorers, most sixes, most wickets and so on, for Test, ODI and T20), rankings (for teams and players), results (similar to live view, but for completed matches), and tables (league placing).
ESPNcricinfo is one of the best sports apps we've seen on Windows Phone. The breadth and depth of content available should keep even the most ardent of cricket fans happy. It's also a good example of how the Metro design principals make for a great content consumption experience.
