Official WSJ Live app arrives in Marketplace

The WSJ Live app gives you easy access to on-demand video from the Wall Street Journal. Up to four and half hours of content is produced every weekday, with contributions from 2,000 reporters around the world.

The Wall Street Journal brand may be synonmous with the famous newspaper, but this is an entirely video content focused app. WSJ Live grew out of the paper's online presence and was a result of a desire to take advantage of, and grow into, new media channels. Intially available via the WSJ website, the service went mobile last autumn with apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android devices.

WSJ Live is a mix of a one-off videos and TV-like scheduled programming. Regular programmed content includes:

  • News Hub: Breaking Economics News
  • Markets Hub: Complete Markets Coverage
  • Campaign Journal: Live Election Coverage
  • Lunch Break: Today’s Headlines plus the ‘Business of Life’
  • Digits: Breaking Tech News
  • Mean Street: Breaking Business News
  • Opinion Journal: Political Commentary
  • Off Duty: The Latest in Lifestyle

In the mobile apps these programs are generally broken down into bite size chunks, on a story-by-story basis.

The Windows Phone version of the app follows Metro UI style guideline with an opening pivot that's split between spotlight (highlighted content), browse (view content by category), programs (view by specific program) and search (find content by keyword). Tapping on a thumnail image or headline, from any of these pages, starts video playback.

All videos are streamed in the app's built in video player, which has the usual playback controls, plus a button for sharing via social networks, email or SMS. An information button gives access to a pivot for that video, split between details (image, title and video description) and related (similar content).
