Follow Euro 2012 on your Windows Phone

With the 14th UEFA European Football Championship kicking off tomorrow now is a good time to look at some of the apps you can use to follow the tournament from your Windows Phone. Options include the official EURO 2012 app (a partnership between UEFA and Orange), Goal.com 2012 Finals (exclusive to Nokia's Lumia devices) and JAWebsolutions' unofficial Euro 2012 app.

Official EURO 2012

EURO 2012 is the official app of the tournament, the result of a partnership between governing body UEFA and mobile operator Orange. Content includes a basic news section, schedule and team information and access to official photos and videos. There's also a fun fan kit section, which includes some exclusive wallpapers and a photo fun tool that lets you decorate a photo with various footballing related themes.

The app does make use of Metro UI, but there are some elements that have clearly been ported from the iPhone (e.g. the Going to Poland and Ukraine section) and, in general, it lacks the cohesiveness of a polished design (e.g. the video section has a different style, which means it feels bolted on). On the plus side, there's good support for push notifications with goals, match events, match timings, news and videos all individually configurable via the app's settings.

The official UEFA EURO 2012 app with Orange gives you access to the final tournament of the 14th UEFA European Football Championship. It will be held in Poland and Ukraine from 8 June to 1 July. Get live results, free customised alerts, news, photos, and standings.

EURO 2012 can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Marketplace.

Goal.com 2012 Finals

The Goal.com 2012 Finals app is exclusive to Lumia devices, which is a shame for non-Nokia users because it is probably the best of the Euro 2012 apps, thanks to its fluid design and in-depth content. Content for the app is drawn from Goal.com, one of the largest football dedicated sites on the Internet, and mixes text, images and video to give a level of coverage that should keep any football fan happy.

The app's opening panorama is divided between matches (listing upcoming games), standings (show group information), and media wall (giving access to news, features and multimedia content). Each game gets it own page; if a game is underway you'll be able to view live commentary and if it's finished you'll be able to view a match recap.

Tapping on a team name in the standings page opens a secondary panorama dedicated to that team where you'll find a team profile, details of upcoming matches, a squad listing and team news. There's an option to pin this page to your start screen so you can quickly jump into the section of the app relevant to your favourite team.

JAWebsolutions' Euro 2012

Euro 2012, which has been developed by JAWebsolutions, is the best of the "indie" apps. It provides information about all the upcoming matches, details of venues and stadiums, links to video that recap every games, news from the official UEFA feeds, and a countdown to the final. Once the tournament is underway the app will include information of all game results, a schedule for the knock out stage and a table of top scorers.
