The Toshl Finance app and accompanying web service make it easy to track your personal finances on your phone. It's best used for tracking and keeping control of day-to-day expenses, thanks to its intuitive expense entry and budget setting features. A key advantage of the app is that it's available for multiple platforms and all data is automatically backed up and saved to the cloud (Toshl.com).

The Toshl.com website also act as an a web app, where you can your finances on the big screen and visualize them with infographics. Entering and viewing data using the mobile app is obviously the best option when out and about, but it's great to have the option to use a web app, when sitting at your desk.

Toshl Finance works on the assumption that you'll be entering expenses (outgoings) and that you want to keep within a certain budget (income). The current balance between spending and budget is shown on the opening page of the app, along with information about how much money you have left to spend.

Expense entry is quick and easy, with amount, date and notes field. You can also use multiple custom tags to categorise expenses. There's also great support for foreign currencies, making it easy to keep track of spending when travelling; exchange rates can be retrieved automatically (for 30 countries) or manually specified within the app.

Toshl's budgets features let you set targets for how much money you want (or have available) to spend. Once you've set a goal this will be compared against your actual rate of expenditure. Budgets can be set up as one-time, daily, weekly, bi-weekly, monthly and yearly. You can also opt to move money from one budget month to the next (e.g. your gadget purchasing budget), which is ideal for longer term tracking.

What stands out with Toshl is the attention to details and fluidity of the design. Expense tracking is never going to be an exciting task, but Toshl does make it as painless as possible. Recommended.
