Has Microsoft announced a real contender with WP8?

Over on UK Mobile Review, Nirave Gondhia looks at last week's announcement of Windows Phone 8 and his feelings on the updated platform. Picking out the new start screen, microSD support, and over the air firmware updates as the highlights, Gondhia is "really quite happy" with the direction of Windows Phone.

As an existing Windows Phone user, he also looks at the Windows Phone 7.8 update:

I’m disappointed about the decision to not provide an upgrade path to Windows Phone 8 for existing devices but I can understand it based upon several factors; current hardware just isn’t good enough, Microsoft wants to provide a consistent stable experience (unlike Windows Mobile many years ago) and at the end of the day, companies need to make money. The introduction of the Windows Phone 7.8 update could help appease many customers, but with no confirmation as to exactly what features are going to be made available in the update, the jury is out at the moment.

Upgrade decisions for existing handsets aside (and that's a debate that's sure to continue over the next few weeks and months), Gondhia is looking forward to Windows Phone 8, and finding out more about the platform and its capabilities. As are we!
