Now that people have had time to sit down and think about the strategy, many are starting to understand why Microsoft has drawn a line in the digital sand between Windows Phone 7 and Windows Phone 8. And in a typically barnstorming piece, Gizmodo's Sam Biddle argues why "...screwing Windows Phone fans is the right thing to do."

What Microsoft is doing with Windows Phone 8 is what it has to do: laying cement for an OS that will last deep into the future — or at least as long as you’ll own your phone. Your Lumia is based on Windows CE, software that was first released back in the early 90s. It’s ancient, and it’s holding the entire platform back. WP8, and its incompatibility with the phone you might own right now, is a much-needed fresh start.

It boils down to this... In the fast moving world of consumer technology, what should Microsoft have done instead? What would you have done?
