The hero of the story is of course the Bomberman character who runs around the playing field maze dropping bombs. There are various enemies including three types of zombies (slow, fast, and teleporting), bats, skulls and coffins. Running into any of these enemies will kill the Bomberman character, but all the enemies can be killed by catching them in a bomb blast.
As in the original game there are also obstacles (boxes) to blow up and, in some cases, these boxes contain power-ups (e.g. bigger bomb blasts, faster movement), making the Bomberman character more powerful.
Part of the skill of the game is getting enemies into a position where it's easy to kill them by only blowing up certain boxes. To unlock each level's exit you'll either need to kill all the zombies, or find a key in one of the boxes. Going through the exit automatically saves the game and loads the next level.
Bomberman vs. Zombies has three different control schemes. Slide control, which is based on swiping your finger at any place on the screen in order to control the direction that the Bomberman character runs in. Alternatively there are options for large and small on screen buttons (virtual D-pads), which allows for finer movement control. In all three cases there's also an on screen bomb button that you tap to set a bomb.
Bomberman vs. Zombies is a fun indie title. It is relatively unusual to see a game of this quality being given away for free, so it's definitely a recommended download. The core game play of the Bomberman style of game has always be strong, and the relatively short level based style is well suited to mobile. That attribute is enhanced by Bomberman vs. Zombies well implemented game saving system, which makes it very easy play a game over a number of sessions, something that's very handy as you work your way through the various levels.
