ProAktivo provides mobile centric exercise tracking

Published by at

ProAktivo Sports Tracker is an exercise tracking application for Windows Phone that is receiving regular updates. It's a complex app, with comprehensive tracking options (GPS, photos, voice notes, text notes), plenty of analysis features (route management, overall summaries, split times, view progress and charts by day/week/month), and a number of useful extras.

Like most apps of this type ProAktivo can be split into two main areas of functionality: one for recording exercise activity; and one for reviewing, analysing, and comparing completed exercise activity. Like all Windows Phone apps in this category, due to the limitations of the Windows Phone APIs, ProAktivo must remain open and in the foreground for tracking to take place (something that will be "fixed" in Windows Phone 8).

Key features in tracking mode include support for multiple exercise types, summary view (data), map view (showing route), lap view (for circular routes), voice feedback (configurable audio alerts during tracking, based on time or distance criteria), and route management (save and managed favoured routes). The data recorded includes duration, speed, pace, calorie consumption (after weight / height is set), and elevation, which is captured via the phone's sensors (GPS, accelerometer).

Once an exercise has been recorded the app can be used to review the collected data. Each workout sessions gets its own pivot view with pages for summary, map, laps, charts, and description. From the description page you can add notes, or opt to share workout data via email or social networks. The reports portion of the ProAktivo app allows for further analysis and visualisation of your workout data, with sections for records, overall summary, activity analysis, progress analysis (improvement over time) and trend analysis (compare by hour/day/week/month).

Unlike some of its competitors ProAktivo doesn't have a companion website to which data can be uploaded and visualised, but the developer does note that ProAktivo deliberately takes a mobile centric approach, with the idea being to provide everything you need, in analysis terms, within the app itself. It is good to see, however, that individual workouts can be exported in a variety of formats (GPX, GPZ, KPL, KPZ, and CSV), maintaining data portability.

ProAktivo has a lot of competition in the sports tracking space. Endomondo Sports TrackerSports Tracker, Workout Tracker, RunSat, MapMyRUN, and runtastic all provide similar functionality. ProAktivo is one of the most comprehensive in terms of both information tracked and on-device viewing of data, but may be overwhelming for the beginner. All of the above mentioned exercise tracking apps are free, or have a free trial, so you can try them out and see what suits you best.
