MarineCast offers weather app for mariners

Published by at

Marine Cast is a specialist weather app aimed at maritime users. The app is able to scan and look up NOAA weather buoys and ships, thus giving instant access the current weather information from thousands of locations. It also provides access to web cams from ports and cruise ships, plus a free 24 hour forecasts, based on an EU forecast model, for locations across the globe.

The information for NOAA buoys is drawn from the National Data Buoy Center. The information included in the reports typically includes wind direct and speed, wave height and period, atmospheric pressure, temperature, water temperature and visibility, but may vary by station.

The cruise ship and port webcams provide a way to view weather conditions and port traffic in a visual way. The cruise ship webcams included in the app cover Aida, Cunard, Crystal, MSC, NCL and P&O. Weather forecasts can be obtained in three ways: by current location, by using a map to specify a location, or by entering co-ordinates. Information provided includes temperature (average, maximum, minimum), wind speed, wind direction, wave height, and wave period.

The app, which was first released in June, has recently been updated to version 1.20. The new release includes a number of bug fixes, UX enhancements and improved buoy scanning. The developer says additional updates are on the way.
