Nokia are ready to out-design Apple, says Marko Ahtisaari

Wired's Steven Levy sat down with Nokia's Head of Design Marko Ahtisaari ahead of yesterday's launch of the Lumia 920 and Lumia 820 to talk about the challenges he and Nokia are facing in the modern smartphone market

Here's Ahtisaari talking about the overall feel of the new designs:

“Our products are human. They’re natural. They’re never cold. That’s partly driven by color, but also partly how they feel in the hand. This looks less like a product coming off a production line in a factory—though it does—than a product that might have grown on a tree. The grandest way I could put it, is post-industrial.”

Again the article shows the quiet yet steely determination that Nokia are showing in the last few weeks, as their Windows Phone 8 plans became clear. While Ahtisaari has clearly stayed on message, it's a message that ties in with what was noted yesterday on the New York stage.

As well as using advanced technology, Nokia are going to focus on good design to sell their smartphones and vision.
