Samsung's Photogram app upgraded with new UI and filters

Published by at

Samsung's Photogram app for applying filters and effects to photos has been updated from version 1.8 to 2.0.2. The new version has a refined, flip-style UI, a great many new filters, and some additional effects that can be applied to photos captured, or stored on the phone. As in earlier versions, edited photos can be saved, or shared to social networks (Facebook and Twitter) and photo sharing sites (Flickr, Picasa, and Photobucket)

The UI styling as a whole has been updating; it's now less skeuomorphic (e.g. no background wooden textures, no faux film strips), which is more in keeping with the style ethos of the Windows Phone platform. It has the added bonus of making the app less fussy looking, and more intuitive to use.

The new UI builds on the previous panorama UI style of earlier version of Photogram by adding a vertical flip element. When browsing through groups of effects / filters by swiping left or right (panorama UI), you now have the additional option of seeing other effects/filters in the group by swiping up and down (flip UI).

The flip UI is also present on the photo editing screen, with an up or down swipe all that is required to switch to another filter. This makes it much easier to compare the effect each different filter has. The editing UI has also been updated, with more intuitive controls and a selection of extra frames (borders).

Many more filters and effects are now included with the Photogram app. There are now 16 filters in total: Glow, Black and white, B&W glow, HDR, HDR indoor, HDR landscape, Oil painting, Ink sketch, Lomography, Vintage, Vignette, SoCal, Fino, 1970, Blueberry bri'd, and Amontillado. The collage effect, allowing you to combine multiple photos together, also has a new UI and more templates to choose from.

Photogram

This is a substantial upgrade to the Photogram app, more so than the version numbers might suggest, and moves it from the not-really-worth-it category, to the nice-to-have category. There are a lot of third party Windows Phone apps that do the same thing, but Samsung has created an app with a clean look and feel, intuitive controls, and one that is worthy of being pre-installed on any Samsung Windows Phone device.

Marketplace description:

Photogram is an all-in-one solution for editing and sharing photos with your WP7. Photogram allows users to apply various photo effects to any pictures in your gallery with the option of instantly uploading them to popular social web services afterwards.

The application offers various advanced photography effects such as: HDR, Black&White, Glow, Vintage, Collage, and Sepia. The UI is very intuitive, allowing users to slide through a list of effects, pick which one they want to apply, and then instantly see the results. Users have the choice of applying these effects to existing photos or on-the-spot with the camera application.

Photogram, which is only available to Samsung Windows Phone devices, can be downloaded from the Samsung Zone in the Windows Phone Marketplace.
