Are the top apps and services available for Windows Phone? Yes!

Published by at

Mike Browne of NokNok.tv has put together a list of the top ten genres of apps used on iOS devices, such as the iPhone, and their direct compatriots on Windows Phone. The popular web services such as Twitter and Facebook are represented by official applications (as well as People hub integration), but he also looks at some other areas, including media playback, ebook reading, and local search.

Browne writes:

It’s long been thought that just because the Windows Phone doesn’t have quite as many apps as you’ll find on Apple that you won’t be able to replace what you have on your iPhone on your brand spanking new Nokia Lumia.

That’s clearly not the case, as with over 100,000 apps and growing all the time, Windows Phone is catching up. So much so that it’s the fastest growing apps store out there today. Driving this change is Nokia itself, providing a host of exclusive and shared apps that truly bring your smartphone to life.

NokNok's Wanted List

The list does focus on Nokia devices (not surprising, given the name of the site) and relies on a number of Nokia's Windows Phone specific applications which aren't available to HTC or Samsung users, although their are alternatives. Calling out Nokia's City Lens as the answer to local search, when Bing does this as part of the core OS, is one example.

But the goal here is to address the oft-quoted allegation that Windows Phone does not have the applications needed for day-to-day smartphone life. That's clearly not the case, and while there are some holes in the apps available for Windows Phone, there are holes on iOS and Android as well. That's not a reason to push Windows Phone aside.
