Opencaching.com is a Geocache web site that aims to be as open and free as possible, with no paid content. All the caches are published under an open source license. This contrasts with geocaching.com, which has the biggest list of caches on the web, but some features are only available to paid members. Geocaching.com has its own Windows Phone app, Geocaching Live, which we wrote about earlier this year.
Ultimately the existence, and difference between, the two sites, and the two apps, is partly a reflection of politics within the Geocaching community. Opencaching.com does not have anything like the number of geocaches in its database as Geoaching.com, but some may prefer the non-commercial philosophy that underpins the site.
Geocaching Plus isn't as fully featured as Geocaching Live, but it does get the job done, and it's good example of how a smartphone app can provide a superior experience to a website. The ability to easily look up and view cache information while on the move is invaluable, and adding it the location sensing abilities of a smartphone adds an extra layer of convenience.
Windows Phone Store description:
Geocaching Plus is a mobile client for the opencaching.com and geocaching.su services.
This app will improve your geocaching experience by letting you: view caches on a live map, see detailed cache information, add caches to favorites for further searching, and physically search favorite caches with the help of map and compass.
Geocaching Plus can be downloaded from the Windows Phone Store for free.
