Windows Phone Daily's top 5 loves and hates

Published by at

Saad Hashmi has posted an interesting pair of articles this weekend over on Windows Phone Daily. Now that Windows Phone 8 is here, what does Hashmi love and hate about the platform? Gathering them together brings these contentious points together for discussion.

Let's grab one of each from their lists. Love first:

Personalization is king:

Windows Phone has always been an operating system that has prided itself upon its unique interface, but the Start screen always belonged to the software. As much as I loved the old Start screen, it never truly felt customizable. Heck, until 7.5 live tiles couldn't even flip, a small little feature that I definitely take for granted now in 2012 compared to 2010. But since Mango, the Start screen has grown closer and closer to realizing its vision. Capabilities like pinning secondary tiles dramatically changed the way I used live tiles, but that seems like whitewashing compared to what Microsoft has brought to the table with Windows Phone 8.

...and hate:

Give Me My Zune Back:

New devices are incompatible with Zune, but instead can either use the Windows Phone app for Windows 8/RT, the beta Windows Phone desktop app, or transfer stuff the old fashioned way by dragging and dropping through the File Explorer. It's certainly nice to have options, but unfortunately none of these options are quite good enough to fill in the gap Zune left behind. Neither the Metro-style or desktop app for Windows Phone 8 support metadata tagging, file organization, or sync groups (a feature I personally loved in Zune). Meanwhile, drag and drop is a pretty crude way of transferring files over to the phone and users may be disappointed to see that their music does not automatically benefit from the Xbox Music artist photos and data on their phone.
