Share your start screen with the world

Hidden Pineapple, the company behind the popular Windows Phone Twitter client Rowi, has made a website, mytile.es, that lets you share your tiles layout (start screen) with the world. You can also browse through images of other people's start screens. It's a fun way to see how other people are customising their phones, and offers a glimpse of the apps they are using.

One thing that immediately caught our eye was the number of people using the small tile sizes to fit more items on the screen at one time. By contrast the double-wide tiles, perhaps not surprisingly, are much less common. Third party weather app tiles are also very popular, as are social networking and news apps.

You share your start screen by uploading a screenshot. On Windows Phone 8 devices you can capture a screenshot by pressing the Windows key and the lock/power key at the same time. You should hear a camera shutter sound effect indicating the screenshot has been successfully captured. You'll find the captured screenshot in a Screenshots album in the Photos Hub. Windows Phone 7.5 devices do not have this functionality, with screen capture only possible on developer unlocked devices, via a third party app.

Do note that in order to upload your own start screen image you'll need to sign into the mytil.es website using Twitter of Facebook, but there's a privacy policy in place that indicates this is only used as an authorisation mechanism.
