Samsung lining up Windows Phone 7.8 across their range?

Published by at

Windows Phone Italy are reporting a discussion with Samsung that would indicate any Samsung phone that has received the Mango update (ie Windows 7.5) should also receive the Windows Phone 7.8 release. There are no details on timing or availability beyond a single statement from Samsung's technical department, but it is the first concrete indication from Samsung on the software update for existing Windows Phone 7 devices.

The quote that WP Italy (an independent site) have from Samsung's technical department is:

"We can confirm that our products carrying the Windows Phone version 7.5 are to be updated to 7.8 but will be made available with terms decided by Microsoft"

The Samsung Omnia M could be all set for Windows Phone 7.8

Personally I'm delighted to see there is continued support for existing Windows Phone devices. Not only will many of these handsets have been purchased on a two year contract with networks, it also gives confidence to people looking to buy Windows Phone devices now that they will continue to be supported with updates and new features throughout the life of their new smartphones.

What details there are can be found at Windows Phone Italy, and we'll keep you up to date with any roll-out of 7.8 in the new year.
