Skype for Windows Phone 8 drops preview label

An updated version of Skype for Windows Phone 8 is now available from the Windows Phone Store. The version 2.5 is a minor update, but is notable for dropping the previous "preview" label, suggesting that Microsoft think the app is now ready for prime time. The app has come along way since its first Windows Phone 8 release, although as-ever there is still room for improvement.

Skype says the new version it focused on general improvements and reliability, as reflected in a number of bug fixes for notifications and calling. In addition the default setting for message notifications from Messenger buddies is now on by default.

The Skype team also note that they have been listening to user feedback, which is used to help define future product releases:

Here's the full list of fixes:

  • Stability: Skype crashing on startup for some users who signed in with Microsoft Account
  • Notifications: Message notifications sometimes had contact names separated with 20% instead of space.
  • Calling: Video call button was disabled straight after accepting incoming contact request
  • Video Calling: Full screen local video preview was stretched sometimes
  • Video Calling: Incoming 720p video on portrait mode was zoomed in
