SoundSYNK offers sync of audio playback between devices

Neowin has a report on SoundSYNK a forthcoming app and service backend that will enable the synchronisation of music playback between multiple Windows devices. Using Bluetooth, WiFi, and WiFi direct the system creates a mesh network to ensure that an unlimited number of device in the same SoundSYNK network can playback the same audio at exactly the same time, essentially creating "a full stereo experience without the need for external speakers".

Perhaps the easiest way to think about SoundSYNC is as a more sophisticated form of the FM transmitter technology found in some mobile devices. The app and associated backend, which is an entrant in Microsoft's 2013 Imagine cup, is not yet available, but the development team say they are hoping to make the first public release in June on Windows 8 and Windows Phone.

The creation of a stereo sound system by using mobile device is a clever idea, though it's only fair to point out that the quality would be limited by the nature of mobile device speakers. However, as Neowin point out, there are plenty of other use cases for this technology implementation too, with the social element of the system likely to capture most attention.:

There are tons of use-cases for this type of technology and one interesting idea would be to deploy this at, say, a baseball game. Imagine a stadium filled with phones all linked together playing the same song or being at a conference and instead of having a PA system, the speaker utilizes the SoundSYNK technology to turn everyone phone into a personal audio device so that you can hear every word clearly. The video above also points out that the application could be used to share the content across more devices than Windows Phones too.
