CloudMagic app lets you search across your clouds

Published by at

CloudMagic is a service that provides a way to search for personal data across multiple services, or, put another way, it's a search engine for your personal cloud. It's able to index and provide unified search results for data from email accounts (Gmail, Outlook, Exchange), cloud storage services (SkyDrive, Dropbox, Box), social networks (Facebook, Twitter), and more.

With increasing amounts of data being stored across multiples services it is a very handy way to track down that bit of information you know you've got somewhere, but can't quite remember exactly where. The CloudMagic Windows Phone app provides a mobile client for the service, enabling you to perform cross-cloud search on the go and get basic previews of returned search results.

The services supported by CloudMagic include Gmail, Google apps, Google Drive, Twitter, Facebook, Dropbox, SkyDrive, Evernote, Box, Microsoft Exchange, Office 365, Hotmail, Outlook, Windows Love, Yahoo, iCloud, AOL, and generic IMAP email accounts. It's possible to add each service more than once. Once you've added a service it becomes available as a search source for CloudMagic.

CloudMagic's Windows Phone app allows for two main use cases: search and snapshot. Search allows you to enter a text screen and will return results for that search string divided into messages (email), people (contacts), files and docs (cloud storage), recent posts and updates (social networks), and events (calendar and social networks).

Snapshot provides a list of recently posted, uploaded, and received content across all your registered services, divided into the same categories as search results. It's a useful way of seeing, at a glance, the activity taking place across your connected cloud services.

CloudMagic allows you to view a preview of any content found in searches or listed on the snapshot page of the app. This includes support for previewing a range of office and image files, whether they are attached to an email or have been uploaded to a cloud storage service, making it possible to take a quick look inside a file for the content you need to access on the go (e.g. a number from a spreadsheet).

If you need to access the full file, messages, or status update CloudMagic provides a web link to the relevant service. Of course you might also choose to manually use the relevant Windows Phone app once you know where the data you are looking for is.

The most recent major release of CloudMagic for Windows Phone, version 3.0, introduced support for the service's new two tier plan structure. The service is free for up to 50 previews per month, with a pro level service available for $4.99 a month, which allows for unlimited previews.
