Microsoft has updated the Yammer app for Windows Phone 8 to version 1.3, adding support for previewing Office files (Word, Excel, PowerPoint and PDF), the ability to create an account from within the app, and support for higher resolution screens.

Yammer is a social network service for enterprise, which was acquired by Microsoft last year, and is intended to enhance communication in the work place by bringing "employees, content, conversation, and business data" together in a single convenient location. It is sometimes described as Facebook for business users.

The update to the Windows Phone app starts to fulfill Microsoft's promise of closer integration between Yammer and the company's other products. This is still a work in progress, especially on the desktop, and there's clearly also scope for further integration on the mobile side too (e.g. integration with the People Hub).

Yammer is a free download from the Windows Phone Store. The new version is for Windows Phone 8. An older version of the app continues to be able for Windows Phone 7.5 devices.
