HD Photo Viewer gets built-in full-res emailer and basic editing functions

Published by at

HD Photo Viewer continues to be one of our favourite Windows Phone utilities, offering a way to view the JPG photos captured by each phone without the (crippling) degrading of quality employed by the built-in WP Photos gallery tool, and now also offering a way to email out full resolution photos without the (again, crippling) downsampling of images employed by the built-in Windows Phone mail facility. In addition, there are now basic editing facilities integrated.

From the Store description:

Your WP8 device actually shoots much better photo than what you can see from its own screen! The softness and blurry is because the phone purposefully reduced the image quality to improve performance when you pan and zoom. Use this app to view photos on your phone with the maximum sharpness!

Sorry, due to API limitations, it is impossible for a third party app to delete photos from any album.

Here's the changelog for the new version 3.0:

  • Added basic editing functions including rotate, crop and flip
  • View all Cinemagraphs at one place and share Gif animations directly from email.
  • Email full resolution photos as attachments.

And here's HD Photo Viewer in action:

Dramatic zooming into pixel level (to be fair, as you can on every other smartphone OS, but...), plus looking at the new toolbar (with 'Edit') and the option to email a full-res JPG to a contact.

Setting up such an email, though note that here too the vagaries of Windows Phone 'multitasking' introduce complexities like having to leave the app in the foreground and having to manually approve 'running under the lockscreen' every single time you want this function; (right) about to edit a photo, with rotate, crop and flip functions on offer.

You can download HD Photo Viewer for free here in the Windows Phone Store, just tap on 'try'. The trial is fully working, with the wonderfully named Bruce Li embracing the original shareware concept in that you only have to tap on 'buy' if you really like the app and want to reward him - there are no nag screens or adverts.
