Uno & Friends bring freemium multiplayer gaming to Xbox Live

Published by at

This week's Xbox Live release is from Gameloft, and it's the multiplayer version of Uno. Uno & Friends. Allowing you to play online through Xbox Live with your friends (or random opponents) it's an interesting presentational twist, but it's loaded up with freemium payments that I find worrying.

The Uno game should be well known, at least in principle, you can play a card with a matching number or colour to the previous played card, with some wild cards to change the colour, the game play, or make your opponents pick up extra cards.

All of this is paired with two freemium currencies - you'll need to pay with in-game tokens every time you start a new game, and if you want to use the buffs to give you an advantage when playing, you'll need to spend coins. Your thoughts on how good or bad this system will likely determine what you make of Uno & Friends

Uno & Friends

From the game's feature list:

  • Easy to learn, difficult to put down!
  • Create games and invite your friends to play!
  • Challenge millions of UNO fans worldwide!
  • Utilize Boosts & Super Boosts to diversify your strategy!
  • See how your card skills rank on the leaderboards!
  • Compete in weekly contests to win rewards!
  • Customize your UNO game with backgrounds, card deck designs & special effects!
  • Play online multiplayer matches over 3G or Wi-Fi!
  • Connect using your free Facebook Connect account!

In fact Uno is already on Xbox Live as a standalone title, has an AI to play against, and doesn't ask for any more money after an initial purchase. There's nothing stopping you trying both to see which you prefer.

I'll need some time to get to grips with Uno & Friends, so expect a full review some time next week. For now, it's a free download via our app directory.
