Squared, a rather difficult puzzle game, is updated

Published by at

Squared is an interesting puzzle game that has picked up a small update today. Your goal is to clear each of the 78 levels by clearing all the coloured tiles and returning the level to black... but you only have a limited number of moves in each level.

I'm a sucker for games like this, as long time AAWP readers will be aware of, so this was an obvious download for me. What I love about Squared is simple.

It's hard.

The principle is simple enough, just get three blocks or more of the same colour in a line and they'll disappear, while scoring you points. By swapping over two pieces, you can create any shape on the board with enough forward planning, and it's this level of forward planning needed that makes Squared quite a hard game for me to play - but it also means the sense of accomplishment on offer when a level is solved (either through clearing it in a certain number of moves or scoring the required pass mark through counting lines that have been disappeared) is far higher.

You can save your game data up to your SkyDrive account, as well as restoring it back in to the application from the settings screen. This is a nice touch, although it would be nice if Microsoft would have a standard way of doing this in the developer APIs, rather than have developers put together their own implementation.

Squared is not going to be for everyone, it's up there in the 'too hard for casual play' category, and there's very little forgiveness if you can't see the solution to the level. It's very much an old school approach... if you can't figure it out, tough, keep trying. There's no freemium solution on offer, no hints system, and no advice.

Frankly, I love that in a puzzle game. The rules are clear, you can return to the tutorial if you want, it handles well, the graphics are clear... and no matter how often I leave a puzzle in frustration I'm back in an hour or so trying again.

Have a look. I'm not going so far as to say it's a 'must download,' but puzzle fans should check this vicious little title out - head over to the AAWP app directory to have a look.
