Somewhat reachingly titled "4.1 reasons why you’ll love using the Nokia Lumia 1020", Boc Ly includes the following points in his '4':
2. You will take more photos
Previously, when it’s too dark or the subject is too far away, I didn’t even bother trying to take a photo. Now, I know that the Lumia 1020 can produce great shots in all lighting conditions and, of course, the zoom is extraordinary. You end up taking more photos because you’re confident that the results will be great and the Lumia 1020 will do justice to your memories.
Absolutely. Readers may remember the old AAS piece 'One day you'll look back and be glad you had a Nokia N8'? Although this centred on the Xenon flash, which the Lumia 1020 shares, the same principle applies to more general camera phone snaps. In five years time, you'll be looking back on your time in 2013 and browsing the photos taken on the 1020, thinking "I'm really glad I had a decent camera in my phone that year". Whereas with some competing phone camera, you'd be thinking "Hmm... I know that was at the office party but that might be Bill dancing on the left with Jane. Or it could be Fred. Tricky to tell because it's all a bit blurred..." And so on!
I can completely identify with the feeling of confidence that comes with carrying a really decent camera in your phone. It's everywhere with you and you can attempt almost any photo. Speaking of which...
3. You will become more creative
There’s a fair argument to be made that the most revolutionary aspect about the Lumia 1020 lies not in the 41-megapixel sensor, but the Nokia Pro Camera user interface.
My very first Lumia 1020 picture (taken in the wild) was an attempt at the ‘Bokeh’ effect in London’s Borough Market. I’m not going to claim that it’s the best example of its type, but I wouldn’t have a clue how to do it with a digital SLR.
Not bad for a first attempt, and yes, I again agree that a powerful camera in your always-with-you smartphone will encourage creativity. You'll find that you start developing a 'photographic eye' for a good picture. And then you're hooked!
4. Two for the price of one
The dual-capture and reframing feature of Nokia Pro Camera changes the way you think about your photos. While many people edit or add filters to their photos, this is even better. You create new pictures altogether.
After the image is taken you can zoom in and rotate around to search for other ‘photos’ within your photos. It’s even better than two for the price of one – you can discover as many new images as you like out of your original.
This, more than anything, is probably the most useful feature of the Lumia 1020. Whereas you can crop in on other smartphones, you're losing resolution all the time. With the underlying 41MP sensor, the 'reframing' is really 'smart cropping with oversampling' and enables, as Boc Ly says, you to 'discover' new photos from an original image. (Though the usual caveat about only being able to keep one 'reframe' at a time on the phone is still valid.)
