Nokia Copter showcases the Lumia 1020 - in the air - and at night

Published by at

The Nokia Copter project is likely going to be dear to any gadget fan's heart. After all, a top smartphone and a top hexacopter drone, flying over picturesque locations shooting stabilised 1080p video in the day time - and at night... The result is a set of spectacular videos that are neatly encapsulated in a dedicated application produced by Nokia Poland. Yes, it's nothing more than a tech demo. But it's a darned impressive one.

The idea here was to mount the Lumia 1020 under a hexacopter and then go flying, showing off the OIS in the phone, which stabilises the footage. The hexacopter has its own stabilisation, to keep it level, but the phone's OIS handles smoothing out vibrations from the electric motors. Here's the set-up:

The Nokia Copter team then flew the gadget over Warsaw, Cracow and Wroclaw, giving a unique birds eye perspective. The video footage from the Lumia 1020 was then cropped and spliced into sequences from each location and packaged together with mapping information into 'Nokia Copter', free in the Windows Phone Store.

Although it's debatable how many others will get round to doing something similar, it's still a very cool tech demo. Here's a walkthrough:

... and another shot at night, showing off what the Lumia 1020 can really do....

So, grab it yourself and enjoy. And, even if you don't own a 1020, note that your Lumia 920 or 925 also have OIS and can produce video footage that's just as impressive....

And, just because THAT song wil have gotten under your skin in the process of playing with the application... here's the original Nokia-shot and inspired music video:
