Metromail fix-up, but still a way to go...

Published by at

I looked at the first version of MetroMail a couple of weeks ago, concluding that there was quite a bit missing if it were to aim to be a complete Gmail experience for Windows Phone. Interestingly, there's now a big fix-up update, with changelog quoted below, though there's nothing here that addresses my complaints (yet). Great to see such fast development though.

Here's the changelog from v1.0 to v1.1:

  • New: Live tile counters now sync across devices (up to 30 mins delay)
  • New: Left/right flicking while viewing a thread allows navigating through the folder
  • New: Added support for the "Updated" and "Forums" inbox tabs
  • New: Added display density option
  • New: Composing new emails now supports landscape mode
  • Fix: Toast notifications now properly support non-English characters
  • Fix: Multiple-item selection functionality has been restored
  • Fix: When composing a new email, content properly persists when navigating away from the app
  • Fix: Special characters in the subject are now supported when composing emails

All very well, and there are a couple of screenshots here, but overall stability still hasn't increased - I still ran into a 'resuming' loop a few minutes after starting to use the app.

ScreenScreen

Working in AMOLED-friendly black on the Lumia 1020, picking up and starring Gmail happily; (right) draft text is indeed preserved even after resuming a MetroMail app 'session', but a bug insists on massively duplicating the recipient field - I don't really want to spam poor Rafe...!

If you want to experiment with MetroMail and grow with (or help the developer assign priorites to) the app, grab it here.
