Shuffle a gentle freemium word time passer

Published by at

Sometimes game playing on a phone doesn't have to be about beating all comers - it doesn't have to be incredibly hard, it's simply a way of passing time in a pleasant and vaguely challenging manner. Shuffle fits nicely into this category and I'll even forgive it for being lumped in with other 'freemium' titles.

From the description in the Store:

Shuffle words all day long! Shuffle is a challenging Word game in which you will have to put all the letters back in the right order.

Words are indeed presented to you as shuffled building blocks and your goal is to replace the random arranged letters to find the correct words. There is only one solution available for each set.

Solve series of varying difficulty levels in the challenge mode find out as many words as possible in a given time in the Time Attack mode. 2 different and yet very entertaining experiences.

In addition, this game has built in dictionaries of numerous languages.

Features of Words:
- Available in several languages
- Several difficulty levels (Easy, Medium and Hard)
- Online dictionary to find unknown words while remaining in the game

Here's Shuffle in action:

The idea is, simply, that a batch of words have their letters scrambled up and it's your job to drag them around and rearrange them as needed. As letters hit their 'correct' places they turn blue, which is a big help. (The word I was having problems with turned out to be 'Zombie', by the way!)

Down the right are controls for solutions and various types of hints, all of which cost in-game currency (you can see where this is going!). You earn currency by solving words and levels and, if you're clever enough at word solving, you may never run out of this money.

On the other hand, if you really do get stuck and need a word fix, then various bulk buys of in-game currency are available, as shown here.

Although famously anti-freemium, Shuffle has a much better balance than most of its ilk - you may not need an IAP (In App Purchase) at all and, when you do, it's limited to £5 - which will keep you solving hard words for months. Nicely balanced by the developers.

If anything, I might argue that Shuffle is a little too easy, in that if you're stuck you can just move letters around until the salient ones turn blue and then go from there. But I'm not complaining overall - this is a nice little time waster and perfect for 5 minutes here and there in queues and waiting rooms.
