Galactic Rush an endless space runner - well, endless if you pay up...!

Published by at

Freemium games are starting to come in that are actually pretty well pitched - as in free for the casual gamer but requiring definite packages of currency to be bought if the player wants to make serious progress, and yet with the freemium purchases being of sensible size. It's a fine balance, but Galactic Rush seems to have it about right - it's an endless runner, with the twist being that it's all happening in spaaaccceeeee. Oh, ok, you get to don a space suit and inhabit various alien characters...

From the Store description:

Be the fastest in galaxy!
Play Galactic Rush now! and compete with your friends!

There's a conflict brewing in our galaxy, caused by an unanswered question: "Who is the fastest in this galaxy?" Represent human (or other alien races) and prove that you're the fastest creature in this galaxy!

Features:
- Infinite runner
- various obstacles and traps
- Upgradeable power ups
- 3 distinct levels and more to come
- Play and compare your score against your friends on Facebook
- Complete challenges and earn the rewards
- vast characters to unlock

The freemium purchases here essentially add 'lives', in that when you fall down or die a horrible death, using one of your earned or bought tokens lets you carry on, rather than have to start from the beginning all over again. Which seems like a sensible set-up and one which divides the casual gamers from those who would seek to actually master the game.

Classy - a full animated intro to set up the back story (which isn't really needed, but....!)

The themed main menu - Stargazer is where you switch levels (worlds)....

These get unlocked after you've made any in-app-purchase in the game - and yes, more level (packs) 'coming soon'!

Running is constant and automatic - your job is to jump (with a swipe up) and duck and roll (with a swipe down) when needed - it's comparatively brainless in terms of gameplay, but the action is so thick and fast that you can't really relax. Especially as the game keeps throwing in baddies and obstacles that you haven't seen before, so you have to learn how to apprach each, etc.

The graphics and scenery are more cartoon than photo-realistic, but they do work well and everything's clear even when the action gets fast and complicated...

Eventually you die, of course. Run fast enough and you'll have earned one or more tokens, which can then be used next time you die to carry on the run with a new life (effectively)...

The basic gameplay is pepped up a little with some power-ups, shown here, that can be bought with energy gel (I think). The 'muncher' is a little helper character which follows you around and helps munch up both energy and bad guys...

The in-app-purchases are, for a change (in the modern gaming world) very reasonable. No £99 purchases here, and 125 'DNA' tokens is enough for many hours of happy game running...

This screenshot isn't from my game (cough), but seems to illustrate a jet pack power-up. No doubt I'll get to this in time(!)

Ah yes, you get to earn/buy extra characters, including... Elvis! Again.... IN SPAACCCEEEE. Alive and well! A nice touch of humour....

It's fairly clear from the Store description and the number of 'coming soon' notices in the game itself that Galactic Rush isn't quite complete yet - expect one or more updates in the next few weeks. But there's still plenty here to get to grips with - if your flying fingers and reactions are fast enough.

Not bad at all and a good example of how well pitched a 'freemium' game can be. You can download Galactic Rush here in the Windows Phone Store
