TED official app turns out to be a flimsy shell, but don't knock the content

TED, short for Technology, Entertainment and Design, is an organisation coordinating conferences where smart people get to share their wisdom and stories with the world - and here we have the official TED application for Windows Phone, shown off below, with more educational multimedia than your brain can possibly absorb.... There's no real catch, other than to note that the application is simply showing you the already excellent TED mobile web site, minus the IE toolbar!

From the Store description:

TED's official app presents talks from some of the world's most fascinating people: education radicals, tech geniuses, medical mavericks, business gurus, and music legends. Find more than 1700 TEDTalk videos and audios (with more added each week) on the official TED app -- now for Windows Phone.

Being something of a fan of the TED talks, I took the application for a spin, here under Windows Phone 8.1:

Ah. If that looks familiar, it's because it's the existing HTML5 TED mobile web site. With the IE toolbar now a narrower app toolbar. No more, no less. (right) the About screen merely confirms that there's no actual Windows Phone coding going on here....

But the content's still brilliant, so who am I to complain - it's all for free. Somewhat oddly, video content starts playing at the top of each page, i.e. you start it playing from its thumbnail and then have to swipe up to the top to see what's being streamed. Ah well - you know now...

Being a web page at heart, I wasn't surprised when things started to go wrong - browse around quickly, expecting the response of a native application and you get errors and screen corruptions.

Best thought of as a convenient shortcut to the TED web site only, you can download the official TED application here
