Words with Friends, rewritten for WP8, free to all, still a little clunky

Published by at

Back in the mists of time, Words With Friends was a clunky, expensive title for Windows Phone 7 - we now have a slightly slicker, but still clunky, free game for Windows Phone 8. The only catch is that there are interstitial video ads, Zynga's way of monetising now.

From the Windows Phone Store:

The charm of WWF has always been that it's asynchronous, i.e. you don't have to sit there drumming your fingers and waiting for opponent moves - you get on with your life (or another WWF game!) and you get notified as and when it's your turn again. Ditto for your opponent.

Well, that's the theory anyway. In practice, WWF for Windows Phone is still plagued with loading dots, resuming dots, crashes, unresponsive opponents (some of which are 'bots, so there's no excuse!) and, unbelievably, usually no way to get back to the main game home to switch matches. Admittedly, I was running this under the Windows Phone 8.1 Developer Preview, but it's evident that there's still a lot of work for Zynga to do here.

Gameplay is much like Scrabble, though with subtly different scoring positions - it's all drag and drop and quite intuitive - if you play a blank then you're asked which letter you want it to stand for, etc.; (right) when someone else makes a move, you're notified with a 'toast', also appearing now in the Windows Phone 8.1 Action Center, of course.

The biggest oddity (other than the occasional crashes and delays) is that the 'go to games list' menu option is absent most of the time, providing no way to get back to the 'home' screen! Once in a blue moon it's there (as shown right), but most of the time it's not! (left)

The built-in dictionary works well, here disallowing a proper name of mine! (right) a typical interstitial video ad, in this case for Red Bull!

You can download Words With Friends for free in the Store here. There's no longer a commercial ad-free version or a way to remove ads with an in-app purchase though - maybe that'll get added back in, in due course?
