Mini-review: Chicken Story 2 VIP

Published by at

A physics-based arcade puzzler in the same vein as Angry Birds, Chicken Story has been around for many months but is completely free in its ad-free VIP version for most of today (as I write this) in the Store. Swinging chickens, falling monkeys, rotating cams, are all in the mix and this comes highly recommended.

From the Store description:

A unique physics-based game like no other! Use the environment and quick timing to help save the chickens and liberate their nest of the evil monkeys. Chicken Story 2 features new gameplay mechanics, all new graphics, and hundreds of hours worth of user generated content.

  • 75 unique and challenging levels.
  • Unlimited replayability, with thousands of user-created levels.
  • Health Pack Network with cross-platform achievments and medals.
  • Localization in 10 different languages including English, Chinese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Japanese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian and Spanish

With ever-increasing level complexity, here's a walkthrough of Chicken Story 2 VIP:

Although it comes with 125 tortuous levels that represent many tens of hours of puzzling and general trial and error, there are thousands of user-created levels too, accessed seemingly at random via the 'Network' option here. There's a warning about material suitability, suggesting that some graphics might be racy, but a reporting system built-in seems to have kept everything within the style and character of the original, thankfully.

Two typical levels - not shown in the static screenshots is that every level contains animated elements that are crucial to the solution. Essentially, the chicken and any chicks needs to be swung/lowered/bounced into the nest and any monkeys delivered to the ground below. Timing is everything, as you might expect, whether it's bouncing right off a rotating plank or being released from a swinging vine at just the right moment.

You'll quickly learn what can be tapped to remove (and thus affect the action) - there are only a handful of explicit tutorial levels (complete with being shown where to tap) and then you're thrown in at the deep end, but then this is part of the fun!

Highly recommended overall, especially if you can grab it for free while the special offer is on (today)!
