My Kodak Moments and kiosk printing comes to Windows Phone

Published by at

File this under a great idea that's probably limited in usefulness, depending on where you live. We've had photo printing online services for a decade, of course, but Kodak has been putting in hardware in chemists and supermarkets for longer. The new My Kodak Moments app for Windows Phone ties in with the latest Wi-fi-enabled KODAK Picture Kiosks, the idea being that you can rock up, connect (and pay) wirelessly and the machinery will spit out whatever photo prints and enlargements you require. And I'd try it if there was one closer than 5 miles away. In cities in many countries though, there are multiple options. At the very least, next time you pass such a kiosk in a shop, the light bulb in your head should go off "Hang on, I've got an application for this on my Windows Phone, let's print off some pics for my mum or dad". And so on... Or at least, that's what Kodak is hoping will happen, though printing photos is something which is slowly falling out of favour in the modern age, of course. Certainly the only photos I've printed in the last ten years have been for parents without any tech skills.

From the Store description:

Bring your favourite Kodak Moments to life with our incredible printing app – whether you’re on the move, or sitting comfortably at home! The My Kodak Moments App lets you print your photos from your smartphone, wherever you happen to be.

No need to upload anything to your computer – just select the photos on your phone, place your order and then collect from your nearest store. Simple as that.

Already in store? The My KODAK MOMENTS App also features a fast and convenient way to do this in-store at Wi-Fi enabled KODAK Picture Kiosks. Your photos can be seamlessly and securely transferred to the kiosk wirelessly, so there’s no need for any cables or memory cards. Connect to the kiosk with your smartphone, choose your photos and print. It's fun, fast and convenient. Get started by downloading the free app.

How to use your Windows Device with a KODAK Picture Kiosk: When you connect your device to the kiosk, you’ll be asked to select your device type. If you don’t see the Windows Phone photo upload instructions on the kiosk (some KODAK Picture Kiosks are still being upgraded), select the one on the far right instead and follow the prompts. Be assured that you can use your Windows Phone at any kiosk today, and very soon, all will display Windows Phone photo upload instructions as an option.

I'll try it as and when I come across a kiosk, but they're not exactly numerous at the moment. Here's the map for the area I live in, comprising over half a million people:

So not too many options! Some screens of the My Kodak Moments application in action:

With the location agreement, I really don't think we need to bother with licence agreements, desktop-style, Kodak?

Usefully, you can not only pick photos from your phone but also from any connected social media account... (right) it's not clear whether all these size options are available at the kiosks. I'll let you know as and when I come across one!

The interface and theory are all there though - just pick the photos you want to print and then 'Send' them to your adjacent kiosk (i.e. in the shop with you).

You can grab it here in the Store - it's a free download, of course, any payment is for prints in the fullness of time, etc. I've no idea what forms of payment are included. Has anyone used this service for real at a kiosk?

There's also a promo video, albeit using an Android smartphone instead(!):
