Mini-review: Crossy Fish

Published by at

You'll remember the classic Frogger, back in the 1980's? Then the craze for Crossy Road, about four years ago, based on the same idea? And countless other clones and variations over the years. Well, developer Chococode (who we like for their UWP apps) started out with titles likes this (for WP 8.1 onwards) and it's a terrific (and free) game to play on your Windows phone in spare moments - typical game times (think also of the famous Flappy Bird) are less than a minute!

From the brief Store description:

Do you love the ocean, let's relax with our very simple game! Crossy Fish!

How to play:

  1. Tap or swipe up to jump
  2. Swipe left/right to jump to left/right
  3. Avoid fishes

Here's Crossy Fish in action, with deliberately retro-pixellated graphics:

Simple and retro - and no way to remove the ads, which is a shame. I'd have loved to have paid £1 or so to remove the ad panel and get more game space - if the developer is reading this! (right) you gradually get to unlock different 'crossing' characters, though collecting enough gems will take a long time and, unusually, there's no way to 'pay your way in' with freemium IAPs...

The game in action, swipe up, down, left or right, to jump around. The waves are constantly moving, the fishes move fast (at times) and your goals are a) to progress, b) to avoid fishes, and c) collect gems. It's harder than it looks, my best so far is about 55. Can anyone beat this?

You can grab this freeware game here in the Store, for all Windows phones, both 8.1 and Windows 10 Mobile. It's insanely addictive, mainly because of the short game time - there's 'always time' for another game!
