Zenit UWP is your indispensible geographical friend

Published by at

Taking the prize for the longest official app title in the Store is this, deep breath, 'Zenit - Latitude, Longitude, UTM, MGRS, WGRS and QTH Converter UWP'. You'll never guess what it does! OK, maybe you will. For anyone steeped in maps and geography, such tools are always welcome, of course, and this is for all Windows 10 devices, from phones to hybrids to Hololens.

From the Store entry:

Are you studying cartography? Or Geodesy? Or you just like them? Or are you a radio amateur operator?

This is the right app for you.

This app lets you convert the point's coordinate to numerous systems, choosing among UTM, MGRS, WGRS/Georef and QTH.

You can even choose the datum you prefer most for the ellipsoid and, finally, you can choose your location or a specific one, as a point.

As you'll see, this is much more than a converter, offering direct correlation of coordinates in any system with any datum against real world photography and mapping. A terrific application, screenshotted below:

A stunning start, kicking the user off with an aerial view of the earth, just pan and zoom (I'm looking at part of the Spanish coast) and read off latitude and longitude in Degrees Minutes and Seconds (DMS) by default; (right) bringing up the coordinate converter on a map point in the UK, showing coordinate system and map datum.

In the converter, pick the system and datums you want here...

...and then read off the new values, it's wonderfully comprehensive; (right) a selection of settings, with themes and - crucially - half a dozen map views and combinations. Something for every taste here.

What a wonderful little application and something of a W10M gem. To have the earth in your pocket with full read out of any coordinate system is just so much fun, even if you only use the data once in a blue moon!

You can download this in the Store here. It's totally free, but an in-app purchase lets you donate a dollar to Luca Lindholm to support development. I was so impressed that I did this immediately. More apps like this, please, Luca!
