Following on from our Lumia 950 XL gallery, we offer a photo-based first look at the smaller Microsoft Lumia 950, which was announced earlier this year and of which we've obtained a few days with a full UK retail sample. This flagship device for Windows 10 Mobile is a successor to the Lumia 925 and 930 and has a 5.2" QHD AMOLED screen, a 20-megapixel camera with triple LED flash, and a 3000 mAh battery.
Although we have to return our retail samples fairly soon, we're expecting long term review units from Microsoft PR, which will enable completion of our full review, including camera comparisons and much more as we go through December 2015.
As usual with the AAWP gallery tool, after clicking through, you'll find captions and comments below each image. On some displays with shallow aspect ratios you may need to scroll down just a fraction to see the comments.
Nokia Lumia 950(click images to expand):
The Lumia 950 feels excellent in the hand, more natural than the slightly over-thin, creaky 950 XL (in my - Steve's - opinion). You can get a sense of scale here, anyway.
The Lumia 950 next to its predecessor (a long time ago!), the Lumia 930...
And again compared to the Lumia 930, this time from the rear. The two phones/sizes are very comparable in many ways, a theme which I'll return to in the full 950 review...
You can never have too many cats on AAWP, in our opinion! Here showing the same hi-res image on both the Lumia 930 (5" 1080p, above) and Lumia 950 (5.2" QHD, below). Both screens are good, but the extra screen real estate and the more accurate colours are telling. But comments welcome!
Glance screen on the two new Lumias. Don't worry about the different information shown, the two phones are in different stages of set-up here. What's interesting is that the 950's contrast is very slightly better. I'm not sure whether this is because of the different pixel density or the use of Gorilla Glass 3...
The 950 from the rear - compact and solid, with no creaks whatsoever.
The camera unit without the rear cover- or battery - in place, giving you an idea of dimensions.
The shiny camera surround does show scuffs and marks though - or should that be 'shows character'?! Here is a good view of the lens and triple LED flash. Oh, and the mono speaker, off to the right.
Being able to slot in a new battery will remain pretty much a USP for flagship level devices in 2016, I reckon...
