SkyManager - a SkyDrive client for power users?

Published by at

SkyManager is a third party utility for browsing and managing your SkyDrive. Microsoft does provide an official, free SkyDrive application of its own, but it's always good to have a choice and the third party SkyManager offers a significant number of extra features, which may make it more attractive to the power user.

For example, SkyManager supports the moving of files and folder within your SkyDrive and it's image uploading features are also more powerful. As well as supporting multiple image uploads, it also provides configurations options for setting image resolution when uploading (SkyDrive APIs limit photos to 2048 x 2048 max), tools for flushing your camera roll (useful if you're running out of space and you're not near your PC) and deferring uploads to a later date.

SkyManager does not currently support sharing files or folders from within the application, so if that functionality is important for you, you may wish to stick with the official SkyDrive application. It's also worth noting that the official app does not re-size photos when manually uploading and supports limited background uploading.

As you would expect the base features - browsing, downloading, viewing and editing files are all supported. SkyManager provides two views for browsing your SkyDrive - the default thumbnail (tile view) or a list view. Metro style UI is used through out the application and, unlike the official app, the colour scheme follows that set by the phone (dark / light and tile colour).

SkyManager has been developed by JDB Pocketware, who are also responsible for the impressive HandyScan (review) and Appintile apps. As with most version 1.0 apps there's room for improvement, but given the developer's track record we're sure that updates will be delivered in a timely manner.

There are two versions of SkyManager, a free ad-supported version and a paid version that costs £2.29 / €2.99 / $2.99. In addition to having no ads, the paid version is quicker to start, has support for pinning files and folder to the start screen and the ability to edit/crop photos on SkyDrive.
