PGA Tour app lets you follow every shot in every tournament

PGA Tour, one of the Nokia exclusive titles announced at CTIA earlier this year, is now available from the Nokia Collection in the Windows Phone Marketplace. The app is the perfect digital companion for following the PGA Golf Tour, with live leaderboards, score cards for every player and play-by-play text commentary for every hole.

The app's opening panorama has pages for standings (current overall rank), leaderboard (from current, or last played tournament), news (recent stories, with link to PGA Tour website), media (live coverage for select tournaments and video highlights for all tournaments) and tee times (player start times). At the bottom of the page there are buttons for refresh (data), schedule (view past future tournaments), players list, and tournament (view current / last played tournament).

The schedule buton is used to view a list, sorted by date, of past and future tournaments. The tournament button is effectively a shortcut to the current (or last played) tournament. Each tournament gets it own pivot with pages for leaderboard (overall scores), media (video highlights), tee times (start list with player names), course (illustrated course guide, with birds-eye-view maps and text description of every hole), and info (tournament timings, prize money and cup points). Tournament information is updated (manually or automatically by user choice) for events that are currently being played, but is also available for past events, making it easy to check out performance and coverage from events that have already taken place.

Tapping on a player name in a tournament pivot, or in the browseable player list takes you to a pivot view for that player, with pages for stats (bio and game statistics), scorecard (current round score), play by play, media (video clips) and news (related to the player in question). Of particular note is the play by play section, which lets you see a text description of every shot a player makes in a round, letting you follow the player (as live) around the course wherever you happened to be.

Individual players can be pinned to the Start screen as secondary live tiles, with a deep link into the app making it really easy to follow the progress of your favourite player. You can also opt to favourite a player, in which case the player is pinned to the top of leaderboards (and rankings), making it easier to see the current standing of your favourite players at a glance.

All tournaments get video highlights, which takes the form of short videos (e.g. good approach shot, birdie putts and other key shots) and are updated as the tournament takes place. Select tournaments also get full live video coverage, in the form of a live stream, available from the media section of the main panorama or tournament pivot. Tournaments covered in this way include: The Travelers Championship (June 21st - 24th), The Barclays (August 23rd - 26th), Deutsche Bank Championship (August 31st - September 3rd), BMW Championship September 6th - 9th, and TOUR Championship by Coca-Cola (September 20th - 23rd).

The PGA Tour app supports an extensive range of push notifications, including player front 9 / back 9 score, player tournament recaps, player start, standing updates, breaking news and much more. These can all be customised via the app settings.

If you're a golf fan then PGA Tour is an essential download, but even if you're not, it's worth a look as an example of how to build a slick user experience around live coverage of a sporting event. The app works as both a way of keeping track of the PGA tour in its own right, but also makes a great second screen (or companion screen) experience (i.e. using it as a source of additional information when watching live coverage on your TV / via the web).
