Netflix updated for Windows Phone 8 users

Published by at

Netflix have updated their Windows Phone 8 client with improved drivers for smartphones with 720p screens, allowing you to watch streaming video in full screen mode. The app also brings in support for the Windows Phone 8 double-width live tile.

When Steve reviewed the app, he found an application that was part of a mature media service.

Of course, Netflix is a commercial multi-platform service and this review is as much an appraisal of that as it is a review of the specific application on Windows Phone... No complaints overall though - with the gorgeous large screens on the Lumia 920 and HTC 8X (and ATIV S, probably!), having any Windows Phone as a rather decent spare film/TV-watching terminal is excellent. Added to the likes of iPlayer and YouTube, you may never need to both the living room sofa with your presence ever again....!

Obviously the high quality video will only be available when you have good connectivity, but you should have a buffer-free experience with the app, as it automatically adjusts the bitrate of the video being streamed to ensure the highest quality can be delivered without interruption.

The application does have some issues when updating, and you may not be able to log in when you update the version on your handset. Amazon's Kindle app had a similar bug when it was updated to Windows Phone 8, a bug which was tweaked in a subsequent update. For the moment we would recommend uninstalling Netflix before downloading the new version, which seems to work.

You can download the update from the Windows Store.
