Find the nearest cycle station with Bikes

If you're looking to pick up a public cycle around some of the major cites in the world, you might want to look at 'Bikes' from Startingline Media. Covering Boston, London, Melbourne, Minneapolis, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Washington DC, the application will tie in with the geo-location sensors in your phone and show you the closest.

 Bikes Bikes

From the app listing:

  • Find the nearest bike to you
  • Find the nearest empty dock to you
  • List bike stations by distance
  • City auto-selected by proximity
  • Manually choose your city, including Boston, London, Melbourne, Minneapolis, Montreal, Ottawa, Toronto and Washington DC

While I'm in Malmo at the moment, which doesn't have a cycle system, the app does show me the closest bike... which is in Bromley, some 960 kilometres away. Good to know that it works, even over such a long distance, and I can see which stations have bikes available, and where the closest empty spot is if you want to drop a bike off.

London based cyclists might want to switch to the slightly more feature rich 'London Bikes' but the use of open data from around the world here makes for a good application.

You can download the app for free from the Windows Store.
