Nokia Camera gets glimpse of DNG RAW support, currently BLACKed out

Published by at

Updates seem to be hitting the Nokia Camera application every week or so now, perhaps unsurprising given the high profile status of the Lumia 1020, the imminent arrival of the Lumia 1520 and this, the promised RAW support. In the update available now, v4.4.0.8 (see also the previously reported v4.3.0.9) includes the necessary code to choose to capture in DNG (Digital NeGative) format on the 1020 and 1520, with their higher resolution sensors. There's a catch though.

Although it's good to see the application is ready, there's one bit of the jigsaw missing for current Lumia 1020 owners - Lumia Black is required, i.e. hooks in the operating system to handle all that lovely RAW data through from the camera subsystem. The way Nokia Camera currently works, much of the necessary information is already passed through (then the CPU and GPU get to work doing the oversampling), but RAW requires extra data that's not currently passed through - hence the need for a tweak to the OS as well as to the application and its UI.

In summary, by all means update Nokia Camera, but don't expect anything new at this stage. Lumia Black will roll out to existing Lumias in the next few months, so you'll just have to be patient.
