Nokia MixRadio takes off with Finnair

Published by at

Passengers on long-haul flights operated by Finnair can now listen to curated mixes from the Nokia MixRadio service as part of the in-flight entertainment system. The Bristol-based MixRadio team has already created a concept implementation of MixRadio for an in-car entertainment system, so taking to skies, at least in the form of the service's eponymous mixes, was the next logical step.

Whilst the partnership is not strictly related to Windows Phone as such, it is interesting to see the Nokia MixRadio platform reaching new heights. There's also an obvious cross-promotion benefit, with the captive audience of airline passengers given the chance to sample on the hallmarks services of Nokia's Lumia smartphone portfolio. At the very least it counts as some a smart marketing initiative.

The mixes available on the Finnair flights cover a range of genres (Hip-Hop, Classic Rock, Pop, and Smooth Jazz) and offer an opportunity to explore the music of local artist from destination countries (India, China, Thailand, US). There's also, as you would expect from Finland's national airline, an a large helping of Finnish music.

The MixRadio availability on Finnair is intended to complement existing in-flight entertainment services, such as movies and games. It is reported to be available to all passenger on long hail Finnair flights from the beginning of this month.

In other MixRadio related news the development team has open up a uservoice forum to solicit feedback and ideas from users of the music streaming service. Nokia say they will read all the feedback they receieve through the forum, though, of course, there's no guarantee they will act on it.

The uservoice forum allows you to submit your own feedback as well as vote up feedback submitted by others (thus giving a rough indication of the popularity of ay idea). There are separate categories for API, General, Nokia MixRadio Web, Nokia MixRadio for Windows 8, and Nokia MixRadio for Windows Phone 8, so you should have no problem finding a place whatever feedback you may have about the service.
