Flipboard smoother, flippier and on almost all Windows Phones

Published by at

Launched back in October 2014, Flipboard was late to Windows Phone, but at least there's now a significant update that's more worthy of the brand name. See below for the changelog, links, etc.

Here's the official changelog for v2.5 of Flipboard on Windows Phone:

  • Support for devices with 512MB of RAM.
  • Additional native Windows Phone controls for an overall smoother experience.
  • Polish for tapping to expand images, notifications and accounts on Flipboard.
  • More bug fixes and performance improvements.

Swiping through Flipboard does seem smoother, plus there are subtle transitions here and there to please the user. A few screens of the new version in action:

A slight overhaul to the initial welcome and flipboard category system - looking good....

Nothing in from Facebook yet for me, but doubtless something will get refreshed on the back end soon; otherwise you tap to enter a category and then swipe up through full and part-page graphics and headlines, tapping when you want to dig deeper into the story. And throughout, where context-sensitive functions are needed, standard Windows Phone tools are available, albeit not part of a traditional (black) toolbar - instead they stay on the flip panels where they're needed.

Available now officially for far more Windows Phones, since all the mass of budget devices with 512MB RAM can join in, you can download Flipboard here in the Windows Phone Store.
