Groove Music update round-up: gapless, artist search, genre filtering

Published by at

Just catching up on Windows 10 Mobile application updates from last week (and, in this case, beyond) - and this one's definitely worth a mention. Groove Music (née Xbox Music) has been receiving various minor updates since it was born out of the ashes of Xbox Music back in July. So I thought I'd take advantage of the latest tweak to round-up everything that has been done since then. Summary: it has come a long way!

Here then are the (many) improvements for Groove Music since the summer:

  • Music tracks are now played 'gaplessly' - perfect for live recordings and progressive work!
  • With Groove Music Pass, radio creates instant playlists based on your favorite artists
  • Groove Music Pass lets you explore, search, and play our full music catalog, right in the app
  • Now playing always shows your last-played songs, so it's easier than ever to listen again
  • Improvements to the metadata displayed when using Bluetooth
  • You can now search for Artists as well as track names
  • Filter by genre to browse particular styles of music
  • Easily continue your search in the Windows store for things you don't find in your music
  • Check out new and featured music in the Explore hub
  • Fans reported that album art didn't properly show album art for FLAC files. We fixed that
  • Added a manual sync option to Settings
  • Select/unselect all now available when in selection mode
  • New layout in the album detail page banner to allow you to read more of the details for your favorite albums
  • Now you can navigate to the album page from the context menu for songs
  • The modules in Explore and artist detail pages load from top to bottom to make the experience smoother

The latest version is 3.6.1382.0 and is seen in action here:

Looking at some of the new features. Firstly, searches now include artist names as well as albums and song titles; (right) gapless playback works perfectly for live albums (as here), with the tracks cross faded very quickly - it's hard to notice the join.

You can now 'Select all' when picking items for playlists; (right) when playing an album, extra information is shown, in this case number of tracks and date of release.

The 'refine' filtering is now more sophisticated and includes genre selection - so, for example, you can set Groove Music to only show you 'Blues' tracks; (right) 'Get music in Store' (and other links through the application) take you to Microsoft's own music Store, of course, where you can buy or stream track previews. Any of you actually Groove Music Pass subscribers?

If you're on the Insiders Programme with Windows 10 Mobile then you can try all this out by updating in the Store client as usual. If only the OneDrive side of things included more storage (than 5GB or 50GB, depending on tier - at the new 2016 pricing) then more people would put more of their music up in Microsoft's cloud. Sadly, I can't see anyone buying into Office 365 just to put their 60GB music collection online. Sigh.
